The 2018-19 Handicap Tournament took place on 9 Feb at Holmes Chapel Leisure Centre. As usual it was a great event, played in the right spirit and plenty of close games all contributing to a fabulous day of badminton.
Mens Doubles
13 pairs took to the courts this year, they were separated into 2 groups where they each played one another in a game to 15 points. The full results of the groups can be seen below:
Group A saw a 3 way tie at the top, but on count back in the head-to-head games between the 3 it was John Nicholls and James Brown of Northwich that had scored the most points and thus progressed to the final.
Group B was a more straightforward affair with Dave Raiswell and Craig Eccleston of Welsh Row winning 5 of their 6 games, securing their final place.
The final was played as a best of 3, and the Welsh Row pair overcame the handicap deficit to win 2-0:
Mixed Doubles
6 entries became 5 with a late withdrawal so hasty changes were made to the schedule and the format changed so that each pair would play each other in 2 games to 21. This meant for some long games, one in particular saw -15 take on +15……TWICE!!!
There was no need for complex mathematics on this occasion, our Runners up were Jane Brumby and James Brown (Northwich), but the champions were Ruth Raiswell and Steve Pickering.
Ladies Doubles
The ladies doubles entrant list was only 2 long this season, with Ruth Raiswell and Claire Griffin (Welsh Row) taking on Glynis Maclachlan and Jane Brumby (Northwich) in a best of 3 game encounter.
Despite the handicap deficit the Welsh Row pair proved too strong for their opponents and took the title
Congratulations to all of our winners, and a big thank you from me to everyone who took part and also everyone who assisted with the handicapping.
